Heart attack can occur when artery blockage, rapture or bursting (tearing) prevents blood to get to the heart. Heart attack can lead to death, as attacks are very sudden, usually within an hour a person can be dead. Heart attack need immediate attention because once a coronary artery is blocked, the heart muscle will die within four to six hours. A Heart attack is often confused with cardiac arrest these are two different medical conditions. As a heart attack is a blockage of an artery leading to the heart attack and cardiac arrest is heart-stop pumping the blood around the body.
Causes of Heart Attack
- Age: Heart attack is more likely to occur in people age 65 or more.
- Angina: Tightness, pain, or discomfort in the chest that occurs when an area of the heart muscle receives less blood oxygen than usual.

- Diet: Consuming large quantities of saturated fats can increase the risk.

Symptoms of Heart Attack
- Chest pain associated with shortness of breath
- Profuse sweating

- Pain only in the shoulders or arms

Treatment of Heart Attack
Early treatment of heart attack is important to get the blood flowing to the affected part of the heart again and limit the amount of damage to your heart muscle. The doctor will evaluate the severity of attack as the main aim of the treatment of heart attack is to unlock the affected artery promptly in order to minimize the extent of damage of heart muscle.

The surgery called Coronary Angioplasty is performed, where a small balloon or a stent is inserted into the blocked artery to help re-open it and restore blood flow.

- Anti-coagulants to dissolve blood clots
- To reduce the risk of another heart attack
- To relieve chest pain
- To control diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol
- Aspirin and other ant platelets
- Beta blockers
